Blue Lightning Internet offers a Virtual Server product for applications which have grown beyond the scope of shared web hosting services but that have not yet grown to the point where they justify a dedicated physical server.

What is a Virtual Server?

A virtual server is a method of partitioning one physical server computer into multiple server that each has the appearance and capabilities of running on its own dedicated machine. Each virtual server can run its own full-fledged operating system, and each server can be independently rebooted.

The datacentre facility housing our virtual server platforms boasts a 100% uptime record and is fully equipped to run as a complete autonomous environment, independent of telecoms and electrical providers. In addition, extreme lengths have been taken to ensure security, environmental control, change management and high network performance.

How much does it cost?

That depends on what specifiation of virtual server you require, but prices start at just £15 per month. You can "roll your own" - choose the amount of RAM, hard disk space and monthly data transfer you require and we calculate the cost based on your requirements.

In contrast to normal server colocation, you do not need to provide a physical server. There is no investment in hardware required on your part whatsoever. It's off your balance sheet and there is no large upfront cash requirement.

What do I get out of the box?

We can provide you with a "blank" v-server or we can provide it with an operating system pre-installed. Please note however that should you require an operating system that incurs licensing charges (most notably Microsoft Windows Server), we will pass these costs onto you. Linux and other open source operating systems do not attract a charge.

What if I want to change the specification?

Changing the specification of your virtual server is easy. You can start off small since the configuration of virtual servers can be changed at any time. You can add more RAM and data transfer options as you need them. The only thing you should be aware of if you change your disk space requirements is that you may well need to reinstall your server software.
